Percorsi Archeologici Sotterranei a Orvieto
We invite you to visit what lies hidden beneath the town: a cross section in the rock shows the more important geological stages since its formation, cisterns constructed from frames or “cocciopisto” (a mixture of lime and fragments of terracotta), wells and underground passages excavated by the Etruscans, tunnels and medieval “butti” (shafts that widen at the bottom, for the disposal of inorganic rubbish).
In these caves, used for centuries for the production and conservation of wines typical to the Orvieto area, one can admire the mark made by its present owner: a series of imaginative sculptures representing “any marvellous thing” the human emotions when face to face with the underworld.
